What’s New

Lately I have been working on the literature survey about what open innovation is all about and as such I think that particular project is progressing.

I have read three books by Henry Chesbrough (two of them where he is the main author and one where he is the main editor) where he defines what “open innovation” is all about. I have started writing on a draft for the first part of the survey and I plan to publish it in the end of 2011.

Nonetheless I have come to this particular understanding so far:

  1. Open innovation is about identifying sources of knowledge in your enterprise’s ecosystem.
  2. Open innovation is about to collaborate with the sources on crystallizing the knowledge they have at hand.
  3. Open innovation is about dealing with investments in knowledge and ensuring licensing of the intellectual property to other vendors if they can make something of it that your enterprise can’t.
  4. Open innovation is about daring to do something differently than your enterprise’s competitors in order to achieve lasting competitive advantages.
  5. Open innovation is pending on the usage of technology since it is a necessity to gain access to the various sources of knowledge and interact with them. The source of knowledge can be on the other side of the planet and modern information and communication technology is the platform for doing so.

What can the concept of open innovation be linked to?

  1. Enterprise 2.0 that is the concept of redefining the enterprise while the new technologies have been made available.
  2. User driven innovation as it is described in the book titled “The Power of Pull”.

Progress of the OSEA Project

I have so far read texts about the concept of “Open Innovation”, though I don’t feel that I have read all the texts needed in order to start the first phase of the OSEA project. The first phase deals with identifying, organizing and defining what “Open Innovation” is about and how it can be made use of in relation to Enterprise Architecture.

I have identified the following texts that I find important enough to include in the literature review.

  1. Open Innovation: Researching a New Paradigm by Chesbrough et al. (2008)
  2. Open Service Innovation: Rethinking Your Business to Grow and Compete in a New Era by Chesbrough (2011).
  3. Open Service Innovation: The New Imperative for Creating and Profiting from Technology by Chesbrough (2003).
  4. Democratizing Innovation by Von Hippel (2005).
  5. The New Age of Innovation by Parahalad and Krishnan (2008).
  6. A Model for CIO-led Innovation (article) by Newbold & Azua (2007).

On the other hand I have found out that in order to discuss the concept of “Open Innovation”, I would have to go in depth with the concept of innovation. As a result I have chosen to include the concept of innovation in the literature review. Due to what I presume would be the most logical order for the literature review, I will deal with concept of innovation as the first part of the review and consider the concept of “Open Innovation” as the second part of the literature review.

Furthermore I have chosen to include the following texts on innovation:

  1. The Diffusion of Innovation by Rogers (2003).
  2. The Source of Innovation by Von Hippel (1988).
  3. Ten faces of innovation by Kelly (2005).
  4. Innovation to the Core: A Blueprint for Transforming the Way Your Company Innovates by Skarzynski and Gibson (2008).

I expect that these sources will be able to lay the foundation for the literature review. I plan to procede with reading the book titled “Open Innovation: Researching a New Paradigm” by Chesbrough.

The Process Model for the Literature Review

I have earlier mentioned that the primary plan for this particular project is to produce a paper dealing with the concept of open source Enterprise Architecture (shortened OSEA).

The first initial steps of the project deals with conducting a literature review. The first part of the literature review deals with open innovation. The second step will be dealing with crowd-sourcing and the third step will be dealing with systems thinking. For each of the steps will a mini-literature review be conducted.

My hypothesis is that the concept of open source is entailed in the three concepts of open innovation, crowd-sourcing and systems thinking. My hypothesis might change during the literature review.

The second part of the literature review will be dealing with the concept of Enterprise Architecture. Likewise this phase is based on a literature review. There are many interesting subtopics (as indicated in the illustration below) that can be investigated further. When I come to that particular part of the literature review I will go in to detail on which of the particular subtopics that could be of interests.

The last part of the process model deals with focus on how to apply the concepts of Enterprise Architecture and open innovation in order to gain some form of competitive advantage.

The Overall Approach to the Investigation of the Concept

The Beginning

Today the project that deals with open source EA (OSEA) has been initiated. The scope of the project is to publish a paper that outlines what the concept of open source EA is about.

In order to achieve this I (Peter Flemming Teunissen Sjoelin) conduct a literature survey. I will work on with the hermeneutical circle.

The circle ensures that the various concepts that already exists out in the industry. The concepts that I plan to include in the review are:

  1. Enterprise Architecture.
  2. Crowd-sourcing and open innovation.
  3. Management 2.0.
  4. Information systems theory.
  5. Systems thinking.

The hermeneutical circle is illustrated below.
